New Hampshire Covered Bridges
A Granite State of Mind

About Us

I love New Hampshire and I love our covered bridges! Our historical bridges are more than just planks, nuts, bolts and shingles. They're our heritage! In the winter of 2009, as I walked across the snowy covered bridge in Albany, I wondered what life was like before cars... before electricity... before bridges.

The seed for this website came from the New Hampshire Department of Historical Resources (NH DHR).  I searched online for an official list of the covered bridges in New Hampshire. If you search for covered bridges in New Hampshire, I'm sure you'll find the list. I mention the list only because it's frustrating and out-of-date. After spending hours trying to locate one bridge on the NH DHR list, I inquired at the nearby fire department and was told the bridge had been "gone" for as long as anyone could remember!

With camera in hand and a fairly decent knowledge of our wondrous state, I set out to photograph and log every covered bridge in New Hampshire. It was a breathtaking and sometimes frustrating voyage! The NH DHR has some bridges listed in different towns than MapQuest recognizes. Several covered bridges are on personal property. There are also several private covered bridges not listed on the NH DHR web page. They are included on this website with proper notation.

I created this website for fellow admirers of New Hampshire covered bridges. We might be a dying breed but there are many of us in the Granite State who stop every chance we get to bask in the beauty of our covered ancestors. While taking photographs for this website, I talked to several "locals" who said they have a steady stream of tourists coming to see the bridges. It is my deepest hopes that the pictures and directions on this website will help increase interest in our covered bridges and create an even heavier stream of admirers to them!
